Can't access gun sites at the office...

Dammit, a new router has been installed (along with some new server software) and I can't access any gun sites.......it's blocked because it's defined as a 'weapon'.

Anyone else run into these type of issues ? I know it's not our makeshift IT guy because they're not that savy to restrict anything.

Well, it looks like Sportsmans Guide works........but everything else including my favorite ammo sites are restricted.

Yeah, I figured a proxy would be required. It just pisses me off that this 'wireless' router straight out of the box has a default to restrict weapons. Now pr0n, I can see, but what if you're searching hunting rifles on your lunch hour ???

Very possible that whomever set it up also installed "OpenDNS".

Much faster DNS routing but it allows some DNS's to be blocked.

You would need the signin info to change the settings.

March madness is almost here, time to run around and lock down content filtering. Try using an anonymous proxy service like JAP:

http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.html

Yeah it's slow but it hides your traffic, or consider TOR. That is if your IT Guy is really clueless. If he's not and lying, he'll detect you using these programs in a heartbeat!

I just set up my home computer as a proxy, and forward the traffic through an open port.

Problem solved.

Funny you say that and 'YES' I could and might just do that. The whole thing started with the installation of the new Wi-Fi router called Sonciwall which apparently has web restrictions built-in.

Oh wait, I wonder if those restrictions would be there on the Wi-Fi ?!?!

Yes, I would say they would. You would still be going through the same corporate internet access servers. It would only work if you can access an outside WiFi signal. Like from the hotel next door, etc.

Thats not how routers work.

To add the additional level of functionality to block certain web sites takes a conscious decision and implementation.

If thats the case, then just manually change your dns settings to a different DNS.

google dns is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

its quite fast and does no filtering.

Local library does the same thing. I had a talk with the female librarian -- she said it was to protect the children. I explained that the 2nd amendment exists to teach children to protect themselves.

At my daughter's previous school, the children were prohibited from using the word 'gun' and it was treated the same as a curse or swear word !

Most corps have a "guest" wifi network these days - for vistors. Just ask how you get on that....barring that option you will need to get some cellular Internet service. I've been debating doing this vs use the corp pc for personal surfing.... but I just don't feel like buying a new laptop and paying $60 /mo. for the service - but might do it here soon and kill my home service would like some 4G to get out before doing that though.

I just ordered a 'Go Book III'. But I did it so the wife could use the home computer at her convenience. Here's the thread I started about it.

I will be posting my experiences and pix once it arrives. Has built in wifi, the ability to add two different air cards (PCM/CIA slots?) and if you use it in your vehicle via the 'hot dock' you can add an side antenna FOR the air card (s).

No gun sites huh?

What about chainsaws, kitchen knifes, tractors--other tools

What about golf clubs, tennis rackets and basketballs-other recreation equipment.

What about the rest of the constitution?

I am glad I don't have to deal with an employers bullshit.

Raise hell about it. As much as you love guns, if someone else at work can look at my little pony websites you should be able to look at your interests also.

I have this restriction at work as well. I feel much safer knowing that my fellow employees cannot download a gun and go on a killing rampage.

Re: Can't access gun sites at the office...

I recently bought a new wireless router, when I installed it software came bundled with it that blocked my excess to some sites (gun sites were some) and required that I type in a password to get on them. That really sucked for me, since I'm the only wi-fi user on it. A power outage cause me to have to reset the unit. Zapped the software package and opened up the router. I never reinstalled the software and for what I need the router it works fine.

I think maybe the software people are trying to, by design, get us used to being censored.

Re: Can't access gun sites at the office...

I've had the same exact problem at my job. In fact, it sometimes interferes with research I am doing.

This one time I had to look something up on a website and it triggered the block on the "gambling/games" category or some such nonsense. I had to go ask the tech guys for access to the website and for their benefit I explained in detail why I needed to go there. The tech guys were OK with it, but then a little bit later human resources calls me up and wants me to explain it to them too.

If I didn't value my job... :moon:

I know they occasionally read employee email. I once made a point of emailing a coworker how the block on "weapons" websites must have been made up by some limp-wristed, pants-wetting p&$$y. Still employed...for now.

Sorry about that Argent,

Apparently Trend Micro now classifies this proxy program as a threat. This seems to me to be more about corporate compliance than actually keeping your computer safe, because for the life of me I don't know why a hacker would load JAP to proxy with when there are literally hundreds of better ways to do it.

We may need to get you a list of working proxies. Only problem is they go down like a cheap hooker on shore leave.

Bingo, this is the very same thought after I did some searching on Sonciwall.

Here's the message:

Re: Can't access gun sites at the office...

Do you guys feel comfortable about the prospect of your employer knowing you're surfing weapons sites while at the office??

Having said that, though... I was at a restaurant with wi-fi a few days ago and tried to access Gunbroker.com but it was blocked by their system because it was a weapons-related site. So I typed "Gunbroker.com" into Google's search box, clicked on the "cached" link and pulled the site right up, I'm guessing because their wi-fi system was able to view the URL I typed in (Google) but not the results of the Google search itself.
